Imperial 20 - 21 King’s College London
The Imperial flagship rugby team, the 3rd XV, arrived at fortress Harlington keen for a W. Unbeaten in the league, a win would wrap things up and guarantee a top finish. Against a team who hadn’t won a single match things should’ve been easy. It became apparent quickly though that the match would be harder than we gave it credit for, as a quick line break from the Kings’ centre put them 7-0 up 5 minutes in.
After that Imperial switched on more, and spent the rest of the first half on their try line, with the only reason tries weren’t scored being a couple of knock ons on the line from Jacob Hughes-Hallett and later Michael Rudman. But with the sun behind them in the second half, and the momentum on their side Imperial returned to the pitchwith increased vigour. A quick turn over and sending the ball through the hands allowed Imperial to finally get their first score.
The next 15 minutes were dominated by Imperial, with an excellent charge down on their try line by Hayden Cotgrove, and Marco Violet-Vianello and Jacob carving lines all through their leaky defence, and Simon Thornton scoring on his debut. 20-7 with only ten minutes left, the match and league looked like they’d been won.
But disaster struck, another quick line break from Kings caught Imperial sleeping, making the score 20-14. Unfortunately yet another line break allowed Kings to score under the posts again in the final play, making the final score 21-20. 2 bonus points from Imperial, but a bad taste from a match that should’ve been an easy win. Luckily ACC that night was exactly what the team needed to recover and forget about their troubles from the match.
